Jason Day will return to No. 1 in the world next week despite spending the week at home.
Neither Day nor Jordan Spieth, who currently holds the top spot, have played in a tournament that counts toward the world ranking in the past three weeks. Spieth most recently won the Tour Championship.
Players lose points regardless of whether they play that week, but tournaments played in the last 13 weeks count at full value in the Official World Golf Ranking. Day has earned 333 points over that span – two-thirds of his total points – while Spieth has accumulated only 161.
World No. 3 Rory McIlroy, who is playing this week’s Frys.com Open, cannot return to No. 1 (or No. 2) even with a victory this week at Silverado. He enters the third round six shots behind.
That said, McIlroy and Spieth have the best chance to end the year at No. 1, simply because they will have more opportunities. They are each expected to play in at least three more events, including the no-cut World Golf Championships event in Shanghai.
